Video security in Kaltura MediaSpace ensures your content is accessible only to authorized viewers while protecting sensitive material from leaks or misuse. Whether your videos include internal training sessions, corporate communications, or academic lectures, applying proper security configurations helps prevent unauthorized viewing and sharing. Kaltura builds multiple layers of protection into MediaSpace through single sign-on authentication, access control profiles, role-based permissions, encrypted delivery, and analytics monitoring. When you configure these components correctly, you preserve content integrity while ensuring smooth playback for approved audiences. Understanding Video Security in Kaltura MediaSpace Kaltura MediaSpace acts as a secure video portal built on Kaltura’s cloud-based video platform. The actual enforcement of security policies (such as authentication, authorization, and encryption) takes place within Kaltura’s core backend services. MediaSpace serves as the user-facing interface for managing and applying those policies. Administrators manage most security rules through the MediaSpace Admin Console and the Kaltura Management Console (KMC). Security typically operates at three interconnected levels: user authentication and identity management through SSO, channel and category permissions that govern who can view content, and encrypted and tokenized delivery for protected playback. Control Who Can Access Your Videos To control access, configure your video’s visibility and publication options. Visibility in MediaSpace is based on where and how a video is published rather than assigning people by name. This approach scales for large organizations and supports automated authentication via enterprise credentials. Step 1 : Log in to your Kaltura MediaSpace account and open the video in My Media. Step 2 : Select Actions and choose the “ Publish ” option. Step 3 : Choose one of the available visibility modes. If you select the “ Private ” option, only you and co-editors can view the video. Choosing the “ Unlisted ” option creates a private link accessible only to viewers with the direct URL. Selecting the “ Published ” option allows you to assign the video to a specific channel or category. Step 4 : If you publish to a channel, open the Channel’s settings and choose its privacy type . You can configure it as Private (visible only to members and moderators), Restricted (visible to logged-in users invited to the channel), or Public (open to anyone with access to your site). Step 5 : Save your changes and confirm playback only for the allowed users by testing with another account. Kaltura automatically enforces viewer authentication using single sign-on (SSO) or Kaltura Session Tokens to prevent guests from bypassing restrictions. Apply Access Control Profiles for Advanced Protection For enterprise environments requiring additional rules, administrators can configure Access Control Profiles in the Kaltura Management Console (KMC). These profiles define when, where, and how media can be viewed. Step 1 : Log in to the Kaltura Management Console and open the “ Settings ” section. Step 2 : Under Access Control , you can create a new profile to manage restrictions. Step 3 : Define rules such as limiting playback to specific IP addresses, geographic regions, or domains. Step 4 : If the content has an expiration date, set a start and end time for its availability. Step 5 : Save the profile and assign it to your MediaSpace video entry by editing the video and selecting the Access Control Profile under Metadata. Step 6 : Test the video to confirm that restrictions are applied correctly and playback is limited as defined. This method ensures security at the infrastructure level, applying rules automatically through Kaltura’s delivery network. Ensure Encrypted and Secure Playback Kaltura protects all video playback through encrypted delivery channels and authenticated sessions rather than manual encryption settings. Videos stored in the Kaltura Cloud are encrypted at rest using platform-managed keys, while videos streaming over the internet use HTTPS with AES encryption for secure transmission. Step 1 : Open your Kaltura Management Console and verify encryption settings in the platform configuration. Encryption at rest is always active and requires no user intervention. Step 2 : Confirm that your MediaSpace site is configured for HTTPS-only operation so that all playback links and embed codes use secure delivery. Step 3 : If your organization uses DRM (Digital Rights Management), ensure DRM profiles are enabled for your account. Supported technologies include Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady. Step 4 : For additional protection on restricted portals, enable secure embed configurations to prevent playback outside approved domains. Step 5 : Review delivery URLs, ensuring each uses secure tokens and cannot be shared for unauthorized playback. Kaltura automatically handles the encryption process behind the scenes, maintaining both playback security and performance without manual setup. Monitor Who Watches and Track Activity Monitoring helps identify unusual access patterns or policy gaps before they turn into security incidents. MediaSpace and KMC offer analytics dashboards to track engagement and verify that only permitted viewers are accessing your videos. Step 1 : Open the video in MediaSpace and click the Analytics tab. Step 2 : Review viewer engagement data, such as the number of plays, play duration, and user regions. Step 3 : In the KMC, open the Analytics module for detailed reports across all entries. Use filters to track by date range, location, or user ID. Step 4 : If you observe unusual activity or playback spikes, check whether access profiles and channel permissions match your current security policy. Step 5 : Export periodic reports to maintain audit records, ensuring continuous oversight of access behavior. Regular analytics reviews help maintain compliance with privacy standards and internal governance requirements. Update Settings and Maintain Ongoing Security Video security is an ongoing responsibility that evolves alongside your organization’s structure and technology systems. Reviewing configurations regularly prevents vulnerabilities and keeps your environment compliant. Step 1 : Log in to the MediaSpace Admin Console or Kaltura Management Console at least quarterly to review security settings. Step 2 : Confirm that SSO or LDAP integration is functioning, ensuring only current employees or students have valid accounts. Step 3 : Remove outdated roles, users, or channels that no longer need access. Step 4 : Monitor Kaltura release notes for new security features and apply updates promptly. Step 5 : Reconfirm HTTPS-only delivery and test access controls after each update or configuration change. Step 6 : Advise all content owners to review their videos’ publishing settings and channel membership. Step 7 : Train contributors on responsible video sharing practices and the importance of restricted visibility. By maintaining these steps consistently and auditing them regularly, your Kaltura MediaSpace environment remains secure, scalable, and ready for evolving organizational needs.
