Troubleshooting FireFox browser and Ubuntu desktop systems

FireFox is one of many browsers supported by Cincopa.

Mozilla Firefox, or simply Firefox is available for Windows 7 or newer, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS

The Firefox web browser (installed by default in Ubuntu desktop systems)

Important notes when using Firefox browser

Patented media MP3, AAC, and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC are patented audio/video compression formats.

They can be viewed in Firefox using built-in OS libraries if embedded in the MP4 container format (.mp4, .m4a, .m4p, .m4b, .m4r, .m4v file types).

How to play patented audio/video compression formats with FireFox browser and Ubuntu

  • With a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04, Firefox can not play mp4 streams. However, it can play videos using other container standards using the following file extensions: webm and ogg
  • In the terminal, run ‘sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras’ and accept all licenses etc.
  • With no other changes, i.e. no flag setting etc, Firefox can now play the test mp4 stream

Let’s test that all working

Log into your Cincopa Account or  Sign up for a new Cincopa Account
